If I wanted a symbolic presidency I would voted for this symbol

name

I received a call from a Caucasian female friend of mine who I haven’t spoken to in a long time.   You know the kind of friend that you hold close to your heart, yet life gets in the way and you don’t call each other all the time, except to wish each other a Happy New Year.  Well, she called me and in celebratory tone, extolled on how great it is that we now have an African-American president, how this country can now put racism in the past, etc.  Of course, she assumed since I am a “piel canela” Latina that I’d be just as happy as her to have a president that had my same color of skin.

Excerpt from our conversation:

ME: “So instead of a ‘W’ we now have an ‘O’ – so what do I get out of this after 2 states had their votes stolen from them – as well as at the sham convention in Denver?  Do I get a unity pony?   How can you justify stealing votes to win?  Just 8 years ago you bitched and moaned over Gore and how the Republicans stole the election…”

FRIEND: “But it was the only way we can have a black president!  You know how many people in this country are racist. It was the only way to achieve that.  It’s wrong, but ultimately it’s the right thing to do.”

ME: “So the hell with Democracy, let’s get a black president instead.  What kind of precedent is this setting then?  Two wrongs make a right only because he’s black, is that what you’re saying?”

FRIEND: “You gotta get over it, what’s done is done.  Let’s see how he does and if he doesn’t do good then they’ll be another election and he’ll get voted out.  Simple.  But let’s give him a chance first.”

ME: “Sure they’ll be another election.  Another fraudulent one, of course.  And what about our voter rights?  What about women’s rights?  GLBT rights went out the window now – you saw how Proposition 8 and 2 failed, right?”

FRIEND:  “The Mormons did that, they all voted against that.”

ME: “100,000 Mormons in California and Florida voted against it?  Riiight.  I can’t believe what I’m hearing!  Obama’s brand New Shiny Democracts voted for the Ban.  How can you justify that?  All Obama could’ve said is all people deserve to have their rights, no matter who they are.  Then more people would’ve followed his lead.”

FRIEND:  Yeah, but he needed to get elected first.  It’ll happen sooner or later.

ME:  ARRRGH!!!!!!!!

The conversation went on and on as my blood pressure rose.   The only thing we have to do for now is let anyone and everyone caught up in their Kool-Aid Symbolic Moment jump for joy wntil it wears off.   Our rights have been chipped away little by little with Dubya – and they aren’t coming back like my friend thinks they are under an Obama presidency.

Sooner rather than later, my friend will see what a terrible mistake it was to trade in her rights just to have a symbolic presidency.  Why would President-Elect Obama buy the milk when she, like many others, gave up the “Human Rights, Voter Rights, Women’s Rights, Gay Rights, Civil Rights” cow for free?

Unfortunately, too many people see it this way. As a result, democracy as you and I see it, will forever be relegated to the wastebin of history. Once a cheat, always a cheat and the rush to get this guy into the history books is a sorry state of affairs.

We get what we pay for but cheering on this criminal win is a travesty. Sorry you had to participate in that nonsensical conversation.

  2. Pat!!! It’s always nice to see your avatar grace these pages!

It was awful. She went on & on – and my friend voted for Hillary in the primaries.

I’m not feeling that great – allergies are killing me today.

  3. Mine too. I went food shopping on Thursday and felt kind of queasy in the store. Chills, coughing, sneezing, the whole usual routine. Today I am in my jammies with a hot cup of coffee.

Just kind of getting over the post election blues a little. Still refuse to turn on tv news as it just depresses me more.

Hope all is well with you. Any news on the job front?

  4. Awww… feel better!

Thank you for asking, Got a little project going for the next few days. Not the ideal situation but something is something.

I feel like a million fireants are crawling inside my head. I’ll be back – gotta take meds.

    AH-ah-ah-a-chooooooo!

  5. Hi SM!

I admire your guts to talk to Obots. I just can’t do it. I don’t want to deal with the aggravation. But isn’t it interesting how it’s the white ones who think racism is over now?

I hope you feel better soon. My allergies were terrible in the spring and fall and then I got the flu, which is still hangin on enough to make me tired. I really sympathize.

  6. Oh Pat, I hope you don’t have the thing I just got over. Are you achy all over too? I have never slept this much in my life before! Can you believe I slept till noon today?

  7. SM,

When you stop sneezing, please read my post on the rush to grab John Kerry’s seat if the great O chooses to smile upon him.

  8. Ok BB!

I took a boatload of medication now – it seems to be working.

    I’ll head over now.

  9. I’m sorry, but are women like your friend brain-dead? (No reflection on you
at all- i know women just like her).
So,It was OK to lie and cheat to win a symbolic black president while women
were insulted, told to get over it, kicked to the curb?
How could someone not understand that this was an assault on women who DARE to run for office, think and speak for themselves, put principle before party?
Oh, they will learn- but the wheels of time move so slowly- now was and is the time to stand up and fight.
They aren’t gonna give us respect just because we play nice.

  10. Hey, now that Obama is president, is this just the Obama bashing blog?

And while we’re at it, are you also going to block the IP of everyone that doesn’t come here to bitch and kvetch like they do at RiverDaughter?

  11. Hey! Politics is politics, baybee. If Barack could beat the Clinton machine and the DNC preordained Clinton nomination, then what else can you say? That’s politics. He won, get over it. Booyah!

  12. I can’t tell you the number of people who assumed that just because I am a black woman, I would be happy to receive their celebratory text messages and emails. My response to all of them was a curt, “I do not wish to discuss politics,” and a link to my blog, where they can learn about my long-standing opposition to the now president-elect.

Like others here, I don’t understand how people can not see this election is a slap in the face of women.
